Early Life: George Lopez was born on April 23, 1961, in the Los Angeles suburb of Mission Hills, California. He is of Mestizo Mexican descent. He is the son of Frieda and Anatasio Lopez, a migrant worker. His father abandoned him when he was two months old. His mother deserted him when he was 10-years-old. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Benita Gutierrez, and step-grandfather, Refugio Gutierrez. His grandmother was a factory worker. His step-grandfather was a construction worker. Lopez graduated from San Fernando High School in 1979.
Career: In 1999, Lopez hosted a major morning radio show in Los Angeles, becoming the first Latino to headline the morning slot on an English-language station in LA. Lopez was featured in the 2000 drama film Bread and Roses. In 2000, after several years of performing stand-up comedy, Lopez was approached by actress Sandra Bullock for Lopez to produce and star in a comedy. Bullock was concerned about the lack of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms on American television and pushed to get a sitcom on television that starred Hispanics without being exclusively about the Hispanic American community. ABC picked up the television series and in 2002, Lopez became one of the few Latinos to star in a television comedy series. Personal Life: In 1993, George Lopez and Ann Serrano got married in 1993. The couple has a daughter, Mayan, born in 1996. In September 2010, Lopez announced that he and his wife had decided to end their marriage. Serrano filed for divorce in November 2010, citing "irreconcilable differences." The divorce was finalized on July 1, 2011. In a March 2014 appearance on Howard Stern, George acknowledged that he was once worth over $50 million, but lost half of his money in his divorce.
Lopez has a genetic condition that caused his kidneys to deteriorate. His doctors had told him in April 2004 that he was going to require an organ transplant but he postponed the operation until finishing the fourth season of George Lopez. In 2005, his wife Ann donated one of her kidneys to Lopez. The transplant was successful; Lopez lost 45 lbs after the operation due in part to the improvement in his health. He brought awareness to the issue on his show; his character's son Max was diagnosed with a similar illness.
